Should You Start a Business With Your Spouse? | Ep. 004

What happens when the person you trust most tells you their first reaction to your big business idea was: “No.”

Today we talk with Maria Mason-Smith, my wife, business partner, and perhaps the most unlikely entrepreneur I know, to ask: "Should I start a payroll company?"

Maria didn't set out to become an entrepreneur. She studied marketing, became a nurse during the Great Recession, and eventually left healthcare to join me in building a payroll company together.

We talk about what it's really like to build a business with your spouse, why entrepreneurship can sometimes feel more stable than a traditional job, how we divided responsibilities without destroying our marriage, and what Maria was actually thinking when I told her I wanted to leave a stable sales job and start a payroll company.

We also get into the practical side of starting a payroll company today, why founders need to be ready for the grind, the advantages of building a remote team, the failed business ideas that came before payroll, and what we'd do differently if we could start over.

Most importantly, Maria answers the question from the perspective of the person who had to live through the risk right alongside me: if we could go back and do it all over again, was starting a payroll company actually a good idea?

Her answer: yes, for us. But definitely not for everyone.
