Jeff Plakans, Founder and President of Commonwealth Payroll & HR | Ep. 003

Today we talk with Jeff Plakans, founder and CEO of Commonwealth Payroll & HR, to ask: "Should I start a payroll company?"

Jeff has spent most of his life around payroll. He started out stuffing W-2s for his family's payroll company, helped grow that business from roughly 500 to 8,000 clients, sold it, discovered he was essentially unemployable, and then went back out and built Commonwealth Payroll & HR.

We talk about why payroll companies need a real value proposition, how the industry evolved from payroll into HCM, why technology alone doesn't solve the service problem, what Jeff learned from building both sales and operations, and why he sees payroll as something closer to a calling than just another business.

Most importantly, Jeff answers the question every aspiring payroll entrepreneur eventually has to face: if you were starting from scratch today, would starting a payroll company still be a good idea?

His answer: yes - but you'd better know why a customer should choose you.
